Cinema Cycle - The Little Drummer Girl

DATE VIEWED: 10/29/2015

TITLE: The Little Drummer Girl

FORMAT: Laserdisc

TIME RIDDEN / FILM LENGTH: 2 hours 11 minutes

DISTANCE RIDDEN WHILE VIEWING: 27.1 miles

TOTAL CINEMA MILES LOGGED: 3252.4 miles

SYNOPSIS: A young actress is recruited as a pawn of Israeli Intelligence to find and kill a Palestinian bomber.

CONCEPT IN RELATION TO THE VIEWER:   Political intrigue and how people can be manipulated into believing right and wrong.

PROS AND CONS: I didn’t know what to expect of this film.  As it turns out, it was better than I thought it would be.

Back in the day (the 1980s) the Israeli / Palestinian conflict wasn’t what it is today.  The two groups have given up covert operations and have now turned toward more all out warfare.

But back in the day, it was all espionage and intrigue.  In that sense, this is a very good film, although it is a bit long in parts.  While Diane Keaton was good in the lead role, she never quite hit the mark in the believablity factor.  The reasons why Keaton’s character actually helps out the Palestinians is never really flushed out.

FORMAT: Streaming (Google Play)

TIME RIDDEN / FILM LENGTH: 1 hour 34 minutes

DISTANCE RIDDEN WHILE VIEWING: 22.5 miles

TOTAL CINEMA MILES LOGGED: 3225.3 miles

SYNOPSIS: The life and major film roles of Steve McQueen are recounted by his friends and family.

CONCEPT IN RELATION TO THE VIEWER:  What is cool and what is being true to your ideals and goals.  Some folks are just more intense than others.

PROS AND CONS: As documentaries go, a good film.  This is a homage to McQueen and not a critical look at the man.  There are no interviews stating how unruly or obnoxious he was.  Only interviews of admiration and reminiscing.

The portrait that is finally painted of McQueen was a driven man that was somewhat fearless regarding his own life and the lives of others.  He lived life full tilt and did not know any other way.  But all the while, displaying an outward persona of cool and hip.

What I walked away with, was that every man is Steve McQueen to a certain extent.  But we all don’t have the ultra cook exterior.

Cinema Cycle - Farewell to the King

CINEMA CYCLE
(Cardio Workout And Reviewing Movies At The Same Time)

Screenshot_2015-10-26-08-05-11-1.png

DATE VIEWED: 10/26/2015

FORMAT: LaserDisc

TIME RIDDEN / FILM LENGTH: 1 hours 54 minutes

DISTANCE RIDDEN WHILE VIEWING: 28.7 miles

TOTAL CINEMA MILES LOGGED: 3202.8 miles

SYNOPSIS: A World War II deserter becomes head of an aboriginal tribe, and eventually helps the allies combat the Japanese.

CONCEPT IN RELATION TO THE VIEWER:   Every man is an island.  Isolation and a change of scenery will change your outlook and expectations of life.

PROS AND CONS: Not a great film.  A mediocre film with a large budget.  Fun to watch and the plot is actually interesting near the end, but the acting tends to sink this ship before the first hour is up.

The location shooting is lavish as is the camera work and the musical score, but the characterizations leave a lot to be desired.

What appears to be rather simplistic ‘jungle people overcome evil empire’ (sort of like Avatar) actually turns into a story about the rejection of violence and the power of reason and compassion.  So in that vein, it is a feel good movie by the end.

Cinema Cycle - Great American Train Rides, Vol. 2

CINEMA CYCLE
(Cardio Workout And Reviewing Movies At The Same Time)

Copy of Great American Train Rides-Vol2.jpg
2015-10-22 07.48.15.png

DATE VIEWED: 10/22/2015

TITLE: Great American Train Rides, Volume 2

FORMAT: VHS

TIME RIDDEN / FILM LENGTH: 60 minutes

DISTANCE RIDDEN WHILE VIEWING: 14.2 miles

TOTAL CINEMA MILES LOGGED: 3174.1 miles

SYNOPSIS: Seven video segments highlighting the features and scenery of some obscure railroad parks and rides in the western United States.

CONCEPT IN RELATION TO THE VIEWER: The concept of perspective regarding technology.  These were once the golden symbol of man’s determination and conquering of the wilderness.  Now they seem ‘steam-punk’ (literally) and the sheer weight and mechanical intricacy of these machines is astounding to see in action.

PROS AND CONS: If you like trains, you will like this video.  If you are not into huge machines that make a lot of noise and belch fire then this probably isn’t for you.

After seeing this, I really want to seek out some of these places to see if they are still in operation.  If they are, they are a national treasure.

Cinema Cycle - K-9

CINEMA CYCLE
(Cardio Workout And Reviewing Movies At The Same Time)

K-9 (1989)
2015-10-20 07.44.39.png

DATE VIEWED: 10/20/2015

TITLE: K-9

FORMAT: Laserdisc

TIME RIDDEN / FILM LENGTH: 1 hour 42 minutes

DISTANCE RIDDEN WHILE VIEWING: 23.1 miles

TOTAL CINEMA MILES LOGGED: 3159.9 miles

SYNOPSIS: Rogue cop and police dog bond while hunting down drug dealers.

CONCEPT IN RELATION TO THE VIEWER:   Everyone in Hollywood has to pay their dues.  Women have the casting couch, men have to make films with animals.

PROS AND CONS: Great movie if you are a dog lover.  Otherwise, steer clear of this film.

As I watched the film, I had a hard time figuring out if James Belushi was just a bad actor or if this was just a really bad script and director.  There is the possibility that it was all three.

The film became very formulaic early on and after that, it was basically sleep walking through the end of the movie.  Several scenes either had no real relevance to the film or just dragged on way too long.
