Lost Memories - Volume 31

Lost Memories - Volume 31 / baby, bath, feeding, nursing, toddler, newborn

I am firing up a long dormant project as I continue my trek toward retirement and moving on to other things.

Over the years I have amassed a rather significant collection of 8mm home movies.  Some of these I have taken myself and some I have found in thrift stores and at garage sales.  This all dates back to my early days in media when I was interested in film editing and cinematography.  Since those days are long gone and it is doubtful that anyone will ever want to, or know how to view these films, I thought it best to digitize them and then send the film off to the dump.

My goal here is to post about 5 of these films a week.  I have enough raw footage to make this project last about 6 months at that rate.

The clips speak for themselves.  I do not know most of the people or locations in these movies and what I can glean from watching them is documented in the keywords for each segment that I have posted on YouTube.  Since YouTube limits free content to under 10 minutes, most of these films will be less than 5 minutes long.  The file name for each segment is the date that I transferred the film to digital format.

Most segments hearken back to a much simpler time.  A time before AIDS, Ebola, terrorism, the internet, social media, etc.  For that reason alone, they are worth watching.  All of the films along with my other YouTube content can be found on my YouTube Channel.

Enjoy.

Just A Little Update - Cinema Cycle

First of all, thanks for all the followers and comments on my cinematic journey through movie land.  It has been interesting, if not a bit on the sweaty side.

After 600 miles and about 2 days worth of continuous cycling, I am going to change things up a bit.  Fear Not!  I won't be taking anything away or doing any less.  If anything, you will all get to follow along with even more movie goodness in the weeks and months to come.

I have been tweaking and updating the Google Spreadsheet that I use to keep track of my media and now it tracks ALL of my media, including VHS, DVD and even Streaming content from iTunes / Hulu / Google Play.  Owww, all that cinematic goodness!

So starting next week the spreadsheet is going to start picking titles for me at random from across all media types, not just the LaserDiscs.  I know, I know, you are saying to yourselves this guy must be a genius!  Well, no, but I am smarter than some of my peers in the office where I work, that is for sure.

Displayed above are the next 6 titles up for viewing in the week ahead.  I know you can hardly wait.  Only 1957 more titles to go before I am done.  I can do this!

If you haven't already checked it out and bookmarked the blog (but I am sure you already have), here it is:

Cinema Cycle - Monterey Pop

CINEMA CYCLE
(Cardio Workout And Reviewing Movies At The Same Time)

00982.jpg

DATE: 10/29/2014

TITLE: Monterey Pop

FORMAT: LaserDisc

TIME RIDDEN / FILM LENGTH: 1 hour 19 minutes

DISTANCE RIDDEN WHILE VIEWING: 20.4 miles

TOTAL CINEMA MILES LOGGED: 638.3 miles

SYNOPSIS: That Other 1960s Concert Film

CONCEPT IN RELATION TO THE VIEWER: We were all young, exuberant and optimistic once upon a time.  We need films like this to remind us so we don’t forget.

PROS AND CONS: When viewing a lot of the concert discs and opera discs for this project, I have a set of wireless headphones that I plug into the video system.  These really paid off while watching this film.  I found that I pedal a lot faster and get a better workout when I am watching/listening to really good music.

This is the other concert film from the summer of love, the more well known film is the one documenting Woodstock.  This film is shorter and more intimate, having been staged at a smaller venue near San Francisco and produced by Mark Phillips of the Mamas and Papas fame.

What really hit me while watching this film was the innocence on the faces of the young people who were present at the show.  We have lost some of the wide-eyed optimism and purity in the ensuing decades as our youth gave way to corporate greed and manipulation by ‘The Man’.

All the performances here are good and some are downright exceptional.  Keith Moon at his manic best as The Who’s drummer in ‘My Generation’.  Mama Kass watching in amazement as Janice Joplin sings ‘Ball and Chain’, Jimmy Hendrix lighting his guitar on fire after his performance of ‘Wild Thing’ and Ravi Shankar proving that the sitar is indeed a rock instrument.

Songs featured in the film, in order of appearance:
  1. Ravi Shankar—"Dhun" ("Dadra and Fast Teental") (mistitled as "Raga Bhimpalasi")
