Cinema Cycle - The Last Starfighter

CINEMA CYCLE

DATE REVIEWED: 05/19/2017

FORMAT: BluRay

TIME RIDDEN / FILM LENGTH: 1 hour 42 minutes

DISTANCE RIDDEN WHILE VIEWING: 21.2 miles

TOTAL CINEMA MILES LOGGED: 6732.5 miles

SYNOPSIS: A teenager is recruited to fight an evil alien invasion on a far off planet.

CONCEPT IN RELATION TO THE VIEWER: Young boy fantasy, circa 1986.  Young men go off into space to shoot at things and blow things up.

PROS AND CONS:  In its day, not a bad film.  Part of the genre that launched Star Wars and other franchises.  Its early use of computer graphics is interesting.

This is not a film that was done on the cheap.  The production values are pretty high from the set design and technical aspects of the film that are not CGI (Computer Graphic Images).

The film benefits from the BluRay transfer which showed extreme sharpness and clarity on my flat screen monitor.  The surround sound didn’t hurt either.  All in all an enjoyable two hours revisiting my college years spent in bars pumping money into an Asteroids game.

Cinema Cycle - The Avengers '66 Vol2

CINEMA CYCLE

DATE REVIEWED: 05/17/2017

TITLE: The Avengers ‘66 Vol 2

FORMAT: VHS

TIME RIDDEN / FILM LENGTH: 1 hour 45 minutes

DISTANCE RIDDEN WHILE VIEWING: 22.9 miles

TOTAL CINEMA MILES LOGGED: 6711.3 miles

SYNOPSIS: (from Wikipedia)

15 January 1966
English tropical jungle harbours pompous professor, mad colonel, war-painted spy, and bioweapon against an African nation.
22 January 1966
An Emma impersonator and a string of murders puts Steed onto the trail of a villainous art dealer.

CONCEPT IN RELATION TO THE VIEWER: The shift between understated British cool, and surreal 1960s fantasy.  Meet the X-Files on acid.

PROS AND CONS:  (biased), I adore this series.  It shows the world in a time that millennials (and beyond) cannot never fully understand.

This installment is the first of the series that has starred Diana Rigg.  The change from the previous seasons is pronounced; in cinematography, in story-line, and in eroticism, never mind the change to the iconic theme song.

These two episodes show the divergence in the series.  The first being a surreal / overacted espionage drama and the second being a bizarre farce with granny assassins who use knitting needles to kill.

Cinema Cycle - The Island

CINEMA CYCLE

DATE REVIEWED: 05/15/2017

TITLE: The Island

FORMAT: BluRay

TIME RIDDEN / FILM LENGTH: 2 hours 17 minutes

DISTANCE RIDDEN WHILE VIEWING: 30.1 miles

TOTAL CINEMA MILES LOGGED: 6688.4 miles

SYNOPSIS: A pair of human clones try to escape the artificial world they have been born into.

CONCEPT IN RELATION TO THE VIEWER: The concept of human creation and playing God, with a lot of explosions and chase scenes.

PROS AND CONS:  A good movie on the social / ethical level regarding our evolution and the misuse of science.  Alas, much of this is covered up by endless chase sequences and shoot outs.

The core plot of the film is the ongoing issue of when does science allow some to play God with what they have created and do they have an obligation to that creation, or is it just a product?

There was one key element of the film that was not flushed out or made clear.  When Ewan McGregor (the clone) starts to have memories of his primary human, it is never pursued.  There is obviously a reference to shared memories and shared consciousness between the clone and original human, but it is never delved into during the story line and is simply seen as a ‘defect’ in the product.

Cinema Cycle - The Mission

DATE REVIEWED: 05/11/2017

TITLE: The Mission

FORMAT: Laserdisc

TIME RIDDEN / FILM LENGTH: 2 hour 5 minutes

DISTANCE RIDDEN WHILE VIEWING: 28.7 miles

TOTAL CINEMA MILES LOGGED: 6658.3 miles

SYNOPSIS: An Archbishop in 17th century South America must decide the fate of a Jesuit Mission.

CONCEPT IN RELATION TO THE VIEWER: Power, greed, governments, conscious, religion and the questions of what is right and wrong for the world at the time.

PROS AND CONS:  An astounding work that gets better each time I watch it.  This is one of those rare films that improves with each viewing.

This is the first viewing of this film where I could experience the work in its wide screen format and with a good surround sound system that has bass reflex.  The difference was significant.  Visually the film is astounding, morally the film is disturbing.

While the lead characters are listed as Jeremy Irons and Robert DeNiro, the other leading character in the film is Ray McAnally who plays the Archbishop.  It is through his eyes that the story unfolds.  As a poignant reminder of the message of the film watch the credits until the very end.  This film just got bumped up to my top 10 list.

Cinema Cycle - Boots and Saddles

DATE REVIEWED: 05/08/2017

TITLE: Boots and Saddles

FORMAT: VHS

TIME RIDDEN / FILM LENGTH: 50 minutes

DISTANCE RIDDEN WHILE VIEWING: 11.6 miles

TOTAL CINEMA MILES LOGGED: 6629.6 miles

SYNOPSIS: A do-good ranch manager teaches a young aristocrat about good old fashioned American values….and gets the girl.

CONCEPT IN RELATION TO THE VIEWER: A propaganda / fantasy film of how the west never really was.  Viewed in today's turbulent times it almost seems angelic.

PROS AND CONS:  I sort of groaned when I saw this come up for viewing.  I was surprised with the film from the start and was engaged throughout.

This is a hokie film to be sure, with simplistic characterizations, and themes of right triumphing over evil.  The film is mediocre with the exception of two qualities.

The writing and storyline (along with the musical numbers) are very good.  They even make bad acting look good.  The other is the scenery.  Filmed in the mid-1930s, it showcases a virgin western landscape that would be hard to find in the present day.

DATE REVIEWED: 05/05/2017

SYNOPSIS: (via Wikipedia)

"The Turtle and the Hare"
August 2, 1998
Carrie is unhappy when Mr. Big tells her that he never wants to get married again. Stanford Blatch proposes to her in order to please his grandmother and inherit his part of the family fortune. Samantha's latest pet project is "The Turtle", one of New York's most successful yet style-impaired bachelors. Charlotte becomes addicted to a rabbit vibrator called "The Rabbit".

CONCEPT IN RELATION TO THE VIEWER: From a woman’s perspective, the gang you all want to hang out with.  From a man’s perspective, getting to hide in the closet in the woman’s bathroom.

PROS AND CONS:  I have reviewed this series before and will no doubt review countless more on my trek through Cinema Cycle.  This episode stands out primarily for the ‘dildo’ references and the ‘Turtle’.  Like previous episodes, I was laughing a lot through this.

Cinema Cycle - SuperNova

CINEMA CYCLE

DATE REVIEWED: 04/04/2017

TITLE: SuperNova

FORMAT: DVD

TIME RIDDEN / FILM LENGTH: 1 hour 33 minutes

DISTANCE RIDDEN WHILE VIEWING: 19.1 miles

TOTAL CINEMA MILES LOGGED: 6612.9 miles

SYNOPSIS: The crew of stranded deep space rescue ship combat an evil alien that they bring aboard.

CONCEPT IN RELATION TO THE VIEWER: Fighting against the unknown in an alien environment.  You know early on that only one person is going to survive.

PROS AND CONS:  This is a fast paced and well produced science fiction / horror film in the same genre as “Alien”.  It was entertaining to watch and had some interesting plot twists.

The ending of the film left me wondering.  Based on the dialog, mankind only had 56 years before the shockwave hits.  Hmmm, depressing.

The relationship between Spader’s character and Angela Bassett, just did not work.  Bassett’s character comes off as a cold hearted bitch with little empathy.  Spader on the other hand channels his best Gary Cooper to very good effect.
