Normalcy and the G20

G20 and the Concept of Normalcy

So I am watching the news about the G20 summit of world leaders in China this past week.  Such drama, such brinksmanship, important matters of state and economics were discussed, feathers were ruffled.  It was all great global media.

As I sipped my Martini and my wife played Words with Friends while Obama walked the dignitary line a light bulb went off over my head.  Wait a minute I thought something is missing here.  But Reuters, CBSN and Fox aren’t telling what it is.  What the heck is up here?

A quick tour around Wikipedia tells us this; “The G20, is the latest in a series of post-World War II initiatives aimed at international coordination of economic policy,...... The G20 superseded the G33 (which had itself superseded the G22), and was foreshadowed at the Cologne Summit of the G7 in June 1999, but was only formally established at the G7 Finance Ministers' meeting on 26 September 1999.”

So basically, what I am being told is that these countries are getting together to discuss economic policy as well as the trade and foreign policy that it may affect.  OK…...isn’t that what the United Nations is supposed to be for?   My assumption at this point is that the G20 is an invitation only club for countries that reach a specific GNP (Gross National Product) number?

Much like my recent post on the “Wounded Warrior Project” (that I pretty much hit the bull's eye on) this whole G20 exercise seems to be painted by the media as a great thing that we should all approve of.  But, in effect, it seems like the big boys getting together to carve up the rest of the planet for their own mutual gain. I assume that if you are Uganda or Iceland, you have sit on the sidelines and see what the big boys decide.

This all gives me Deja Vu.  Before I retired, one of my jobs was working with an oversight agency in Arizona State Government that audited the doings of Child Protective Services (CPS).  We held hearings and produced reports showing how well / poorly CPS was doing it’s job.  Usually is was doing it pretty poorly.

Then, one day we got wind of a new process that CPS was doing called the “Child and Family Team Meetings” (CFT) that also produced reports to the court regarding the status of the children in question.  We never saw these reports, because they went straight to the Juvenile Court Judge that oversaw the case.

Fast forward four years and I am about to retire.  I have a new job working at a county court in southern Arizona.  I am one of the few court workers that get to handle the Juvenile court files for the county.  In looking through one that was being processed, I came across a copy of a CFT that had been sent to the court, along with the reports from my old agency.  Guess what?  They were exact copies in format and content, only the CPS version painted a much more rosy picture.

Moral of the story?  If you don’t like the conversation, start a new one.  If you don’t like the way things are going, start a competing enterprise that is more favorable to your point of view.

Who needs the headache of putting up with that pesky U.N. and their resolutions.  Hello G20!!!!

Cinema Cycle - ShowGirls

Showgirls (1995)

DATE REVIEWED: 09/07/2016

TITLE: Showgirls

FORMAT: LaserDisc

TIME RIDDEN / FILM LENGTH: 2 hours 13 minutes

DISTANCE RIDDEN WHILE VIEWING: 29.9 miles

TOTAL CINEMA MILES LOGGED: 5125.6 miles

SYNOPSIS: A young runaway with a past becomes a top billed Las Vegas Showgirl before throwing it all away and leaving town.

CONCEPT IN RELATION TO THE VIEWER: A rags to riches to rags story, full of hedonism, lust, greed and….did I mention lust?

PROS AND CONS:  I have seen this before and I really want to like this film.  The acting, production value, style, pace are all top notch, but it just does not jell right.  You never really identify with the main character unless you are an 18 year old female with an attitude and a killer body.

That said, you get to see a LOT of Elizabeth Berkley in this film.  We are talking full frontal, more than once, for extended periods of time.  She is creepy, partly because of the way she is made up to look and partly because she is acting that way.  She is good in her role, as is Gina Gershon who plays the femme-fatale that Berkley’s Nomi usurps.

One thing I noticed was the quality of the media from this LaserDisc.  It was one of the latter discs made (1995) and has the THX / AC-3 soundtrack which was noticeable in the film.  The musical numbers practically burst out of the speakers.

DATE REVIEWED: 09/05/2016

FORMAT: Laserdisc

TIME RIDDEN / FILM LENGTH: 1 hour 20 minutes

DISTANCE RIDDEN WHILE VIEWING: 19.1 miles

TOTAL CINEMA MILES LOGGED: 5095.7 miles

SYNOPSIS: A live performance of Anton Bruckner's 7th Symphony performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in London England, conducted by Sir Georg Solti.

CONCEPT IN RELATION TO THE VIEWER: Emotion that transcends the centuries in the form of sound and music.

PROS AND CONS:  As concert films go, very good.  It was almost impossible to get a good shot of George Solti because he was moving so much while conducting.

A powerful moving work reminiscent of Wagner who Bruckner is often linked with in musical style.  An interesting intro is an interview with Solti where he discussed Bruckner's life and relationship with Wagner.  Fascinating stuff.

By the end of the concert you can tell that Solti is eager to get off stage, no doubt because he had just done aerobics for an hour and a half in a tux and was apparently about to pass out.

DATE REVIEWED: 09/02/2016

FORMAT: Laserdisc

TIME RIDDEN / FILM LENGTH: 1 hour 49 minutes

DISTANCE RIDDEN WHILE VIEWING: 26.3 miles

TOTAL CINEMA MILES LOGGED: 5076.6 miles

SYNOPSIS: Two con-men compete to win the affection / wealth of a young woman on the French Riviera

CONCEPT IN RELATION TO THE VIEWER:   Morality tale of coming to terms with one's conscious while duping susceptible young women, with comedic farce thrown in.

PROS AND CONS:  Not a bad film and funny at times.  The film appears to be Steve Martin’s coming out picture, showing his acting ability next to veteran thespian, Michael Caine.

Some of the comedy routines performed by Martin a little long and drawn out.  They are funny, but in somewhat of a painful way.  Caine is just rock solid as ever as the con-man / statesman and benefactor of the small French town.

The plot twist at the end wasn’t to hard to see coming.  I figured it out about halfway through the film.  A light hearted romp that is fun to watch but not what I would call great cinema.

Cinema Cycle - Panic in the Streets

DATE REVIEWED: 08/31/2016

FORMAT: Laserdisc

TIME RIDDEN / FILM LENGTH: 1 hour 36 minutes

DISTANCE RIDDEN WHILE VIEWING: 23 miles

TOTAL CINEMA MILES LOGGED: 5050.3 miles

SYNOPSIS: A Federal Health Inspector and skeptical cop attempt to track down the carrier of pneumonic plague in 1950s New Orleans

CONCEPT IN RELATION TO THE VIEWER: Righteous, competent men combat incompetence, ignorance, fear and greed in an attempt to save a city.

PROS AND CONS:  I didn’t know what to expect here and was surprised at what I found.  A very well done noir type crime drama with a stellar cast.

The film is dark, shot in black and white and often at night, it is a moody work.  However, you get to see 1950’s New Orleans in all it’s glory.  The Big Easy never looked so good.

There are a few minor issues with the plot and some of the character development, but Widmark, Douglas and Palance are so much fun to watch you really don’t notice.

Cinema Cycle - Battlestar Galactica - Razor

CINEMA CYCLE
(Cardio Workout And Reviewing Movies At The Same Time)

DATE REVIEWED: 08/29/2016

FORMAT: BluRay

TIME RIDDEN / FILM LENGTH: 1 hour 48 minutes

DISTANCE RIDDEN WHILE VIEWING: 24.9 miles

TOTAL CINEMA MILES LOGGED: 5027.3 miles

SYNOPSIS: A continuation of the Battlestar Galactica plot where the backstory of the Battlestar Pegasus is explored.

CONCEPT IN RELATION TO THE VIEWER: Lesbians in command.  Seriously, a whole lot of backstory on the series and character development both old and new.

PROS AND CONS:  I found this enjoyable to watch.  Probably because I have seen the entire series and had a clue about what was going on.  If you haven’t seen Battlestar Galactica from beginning to end then you might have a hard time understanding what is going on.

Very well shot and paced with good acting.  The plot uses a lot of time shift and flashback to fill in character development within the series, centering around the Battlestar Pegasus.

There is a strong current of lesbianism in this film that is hard to ignore.  At some points in the movie it is almost like ‘bitches in command’, where most of the men play secondary support roles.  A worthy extension of the series, but the whole sci-fi, combat, mano-y-mano, aircraft carrier in space theme is starting to get a bit tiring.

Cinema Cycle - Return to Everest

CINEMA CYCLE
(Cardio Workout And Reviewing Movies At The Same Time)

File_000.png

DATE REVIEWED: 08/26/2016

FORMAT: Laserdisc

TIME RIDDEN / FILM LENGTH: 58 minutes

DISTANCE RIDDEN WHILE VIEWING: 14.6 miles

TOTAL CINEMA MILES LOGGED: 5002.4 miles

SYNOPSIS: Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay return to Mt. Everest to celebrate the 30 year anniversary of climbing the mountain.

CONCEPT IN RELATION TO THE VIEWER: A feel good postcard showing Hillary’s as the benefactor of the Sherpa community and the reflection of how his conquest has shaped their lives.

PROS AND CONS:  I loved the National Geographic specials as a child.  They showed me parts of the world that I had never known of prior.  While that whimsical recollections of youth is still here in the film, it is definitely showing its age.

The film is a collection of home movies and recollections by Hillary outlining what he has done for the Sherpas and how his conquering of the highest peak on earth affected the small isolated community.

It is apparent that this is not a well balanced documentary, but an attempt by Hillary (and the producer) to show Hillary and his accomplishments in a positive light.  The filmmakers only slightly touch on how Hillary’s exploits have adversely affected the self sustaining Sherpa community.  What they do show are long sequences of rural Sherpa life.
