Showgirls (1995)

DATE REVIEWED: 09/07/2016

TITLE: Showgirls

FORMAT: LaserDisc

TIME RIDDEN / FILM LENGTH: 2 hours 13 minutes

DISTANCE RIDDEN WHILE VIEWING: 29.9 miles

TOTAL CINEMA MILES LOGGED: 5125.6 miles

SYNOPSIS: A young runaway with a past becomes a top billed Las Vegas Showgirl before throwing it all away and leaving town.

CONCEPT IN RELATION TO THE VIEWER: A rags to riches to rags story, full of hedonism, lust, greed and….did I mention lust?

PROS AND CONS:  I have seen this before and I really want to like this film.  The acting, production value, style, pace are all top notch, but it just does not jell right.  You never really identify with the main character unless you are an 18 year old female with an attitude and a killer body.

That said, you get to see a LOT of Elizabeth Berkley in this film.  We are talking full frontal, more than once, for extended periods of time.  She is creepy, partly because of the way she is made up to look and partly because she is acting that way.  She is good in her role, as is Gina Gershon who plays the femme-fatale that Berkley’s Nomi usurps.

One thing I noticed was the quality of the media from this LaserDisc.  It was one of the latter discs made (1995) and has the THX / AC-3 soundtrack which was noticeable in the film.  The musical numbers practically burst out of the speakers.
