For RePeats Sake: Kitaro - The Light Of The Spirit

TAKE AWAY:

Smooth jazz with a background of natural images of rain, surf, snow, etc.  Great for background music and calming visuals, but otherwise nothing really earth shattering or interesting here.  What was probably an innovative presentation back in the 1990, is more like visual elevator music today.

For RePeats Sake: Enya - Moon Shadows

TAKE AWAY:

A music disc comprised of five songs.  What appears to be a cross of an 8" music disc and a full Laserdisc, this is a one-sided CLV disc totaling 22 minutes.  Most of the work here is from cinema soundtracks and her other well known works.  It is artsy and laid back, ideal for background music, otherwise, somewhat forgettable.

For RePeats Sake: Playboy Video Playmate Calendar - 1993

TAKE AWAY:

These discs were the holy (expensive) grail of collecting laserdiscs when they were still in production.  This is a video  extension of the Playboy Calendar (which was ubiquitous in every 1980s college dorm room). What we have here are six vignettes of wholesome young woman, with slick production and direction, who are mostly promoting Hugh Hefner and his brand of hedonism and masochism. However, by today's standards, you will see more scandalous content at the grocery store express check-out lane.

For RePeats Sake: Oriental Dreams

Take Away:

The ideal repeat disc for the Man Cave.  Generic soft jazz with images of topless woman cavorting on beaches and riding motorcycles.  Sort of like a cross-over disc for young boys transitioning from Anime to Pornography.  It is simple and makes for great background music and visuals, but not much else.  Interestingly enough, this is a CAV disc (nerd speak), so you only get 30 minutes per side, but you can freeze every luscious frame!

For RePeats Sake: Hullabaloo Vol 1 & 2

Take Away:

Volumes 3 & 4 were so infectious, I went back to the well for more.  Its sort of like your first taste of cotton candy at the County Fair, you want more.  This didn't disappoint.  There are more musical numbers here than I can recall, each interesting or entertaining, but there was one standout.  The trio between Nancy Sinatra, Lola Falana and Frankie Avalon where they harmonize and laugh through popular television theme songs from the 1960s was just too surreal.  I thought someone had dropped LSD in my coffee.  Check out the YouTube version.

For RePeats Sake: Cindy Crawford - Shape Your Body Workout (with Radu!)

Take Away:

I have often wondered who purchased and actually used these disc after more than 1 or 2 viewings.  Not a bad video, especially if you like ogling Cindy.  Every time I see a workout video like this, I chuckle at the fact that most of these celebrity fitness experts have the resources to do stretching and yoga on a beach or a high-rise Manhattan rooftop.  Must be nice.

For RePeats Sake: M.C. Hammer - Non-Stop

Take Away

The man had talent and his singing and dancing are infectious.  However, all of his proselytizing about black empowerment comes off as self righteous and a bit hypocritical.  Side one of this disc is an hour long film focusing on Hammers 'acting' talents.  It was a bit cringe-worthy when he wasn't doing a dance number.

Track List:

(Side 1)[short film]
Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em
That's Why We Pray
Yo Sweet Baby
Where You Let Them Be
I Am Dance Machine

(Side 2)
Let's Get It Started (live)
Turn This Mutha Out
Pump It Up
They Put In The Mix
Making of Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em
U Can't Touch This
Have Uou Seen Her
Pray II

For RePeats Sake: Listen Up - The Lives Of Quincy Jones

Take Away:

There is no track list here, more of an intimate portrait / documentary of Jones and all the musicians that he has collaborated with...and there are a LOT of them.  The definite aire to Duke Ellington.  Very well shot and produced.

For RePeats Sake - Hullabaloo - Volumes 3 & 4

Take Away:

I never knew that Gary Lewis was Jerry Lewis' son.  All the Go-Go dancers appear to be overdosing on Amphetamines.  Watching him here, its hard to believe that Sonny Bono would go on to be Mayor of Palm Spring and eventually a U.S. Senator.  Trini Lopez was quite the rocker in his day.  The Hermits and Dreamers....wow.  Was I ever this young and innocent?  A rare look at Brian Epstein not pushing the Beatles.

Cinema Cycle - Classical Visions #5

A real hidden gem in my collection. Imagine very good classical music done by Monty Python. The imagery is surreal and at times very funny. But the music is excellent. Looking forward to seeing more in this series.
