SYNOPSIS: The chosen ones attempts to break into the system that controls society, only to discover that everything is pre-ordained and we are all pawns in the future.
CONCEPT IN RELATION TO THE VIEWER: Conspiracy theory on the grand scale, but also a metaphor for the concepts of power, structure and society and how they are all manipulated by someone.
PROS AND CONS: To say that his film is slick would be an understatement. The choreography and the production design alone make it worth watching.
As I watched this film for the second time I was able to delve into something that the initial visual impact of the film overshadows. That something is the Wachowski siblings fascination with what reality really is and how our perception of it can be manipulated. This is a theme that runs through a lot of the Wachowskis’ work.
If you edited out all of the action / fight scenes in the film and just strung the dialog scenes together back to back, you would get a pretty profound one hour lecture on the meaning of life and our place in it, not to mention the concepts of free will and choice.
This film is a part of my LaserDisc Collection.
