FORMAT: LaserDisc

TIME RIDDEN / FILM LENGTH: 2 hours 45 minutes

DISTANCE RIDDEN WHILE VIEWING: 40.3 miles

TOTAL CINEMA MILES LOGGED: 2805.1 miles

SYNOPSIS: An aspiring singer befriends a gangster to help her rise to the top.  The gangster becomes infatuated with the singer which leads to a violent breakup.

CONCEPT IN RELATION TO THE VIEWER:   Using others to get what you want and the danger of being in a controlling relationship.  Doris Day sings A LOT in this film.

PROS AND CONS: A great film for what it is.  It is a 1955 MGM musical with lavish sets, production numbers and good acting.  It’s one failing is the script and plot which falls flat over the course of the film and the ending is pretty unbelievable.

This is supposed to be a fictionalized biography of Ruth Etting.  While I don’t know how close the film is to the actual life of Ms. Etting, I hope her real life was a bit more interesting. While Day does her best in the film, Cagney’s character falls flat.  He is not very believable as the gangster and his infatuation with Etting (Day) in the film seems a bit forced.  Sort of like a gangster / stalker.

This was an exceptionally long cinema cycle, lasting close to three hours.  This was due to the supplemental material on the disk.  A collection of MGM trailers for 1955 that were titled “MGMs Cinema Celebration for 1955” and a short film starring the real Ruth Etting that was just a bit on the bizarre side.
