CINEMA CYCLE
(Cardio Workout And Reviewing Movies At The Same Time)
DATE REVIEWED: 01/02/2017
FORMAT: Laserdisc
TIME RIDDEN / FILM LENGTH: 1 hour 48 minutes
DISTANCE RIDDEN WHILE VIEWING: 25.4 miles
TOTAL CINEMA MILES LOGGED: 5932.8 miles
SYNOPSIS: Two lost hunters come across a town that appears for only a day every 100 years and become entangled with the residents
CONCEPT IN RELATION TO THE VIEWER: Escapism from our everyday lives. Finding happiness in places you don’t expect.
PROS AND CONS: The con is, it is a stage play. It is written and filmed as such. That said, it is a pretty lavish stage play with over the top sets. None of this was done on location, these are all sound stages.
This is basically American Opera. There is song and dance intermixed with plot lines of romance and denial, all under a time line. Much like American in Paris, also a Minnelli / Kelly collaboration, it borders on the avante garde.
The film marks a departure from the serious guy films of the day and gets in touch with the softer more emotional male role model. In that regard, Van Johnson’s character in this film is a hoot. He has all the best lines as the laconic side kick who sees the world for what it really is.
This film is a part of my LaserDisc Collection.
